Research Groups

What is a research group?

According to the regulations for using the Eden cluster resources, every cluster user must be a member of a research group. A research group is an organizational unit that facilitates effective management of computational resource allocation.

Who can create their own research group?

Each research group is led by a group leader – a faculty member from Mini PW who meets the following conditions:

  1. They are employed at the Mini PW department.
  2. They have declared affiliation with the so-called N Number.

What are the responsibilities of a research group leader?

In addition to the same rights as other users (i.e., access to the computing cluster), the group leader is also obligated to:

  1. Supervise the activities of group members on the cluster, particularly ensuring that resources are used efficiently and not misused.
  2. Ensure that if cluster computations contribute to a scientific publication or thesis, the publication includes the acknowledgment text specified in the regulations available at https://hpc.mini.pw.edu.pl/rules.
  3. Submit an annual report to the HPC Council summarizing the work conducted on the cluster and its outcomes. This helps us track our impact on the scientific community and supports funding efforts.
  4. Periodically verify and update the group membership list upon request.

How to create a new research group?

To create a group, an eligible person must send an email to michał.kadlof@pw.edu.pl with a request to create the group.

The email must include:

  1. A proposed group name.
  2. A declaration of acceptance of the cluster usage regulations and a commitment to fulfill the responsibilities of a group leader.
  3. Optionally, a list of people to be added to the group (full name and email address in the @pw.edu.pl domain).
  4. Information about granting access to individuals outside PW, if applicable.

What can the group name be?

The group name must meet the following criteria:

  1. It should be short – preferably up to 16 characters.
  2. It can consist only of lowercase Latin letters, digits, and the hyphen symbol “-”.
  3. It cannot be changed in the future.
  4. It should be related to the group leader (not a current research project).

Example name: kowalski-lab

The name is used to identify the group in the system. Users must specify it when submitting jobs to indicate which group the cluster usage hours should be assigned to.

How can a group leader monitor resource usage in their group?

Once the group is created, the leader receives a list of commands from the administrator to generate reports on who used the group's resources, how much was used, and over what period of time.
